WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
World Environment Day is a United Nations global celebration that takes place every year on 5 June. In England and Wales the Environment Agency has been promoting the campaign since 2004. For 2008 the international theme is CO2 Kick the Habit – towards a low carbon economy. Here in England and Wales they are focussing on how we’ll get ready for the effects of climate change – it’s time for a new routine.
Take part in their on-line survey which runs throughout the summer, here.
The Environment Agency It’s their job to look after your environment and make it a better place – for you, and for future generations. Your environment is the air you breathe, the water you drink and the ground you walk on. Working with business, Government and society as a whole, they are making your environment cleaner and healthier. The Environment Agency – out there, making your environment a better place.
Stand up to climate change The Environment Agency are running a campaign for World Environment Day on 5 June to help people adapt to the challenge of climate change. They are using comedian Jon Richardson to reach people and they will have jute designer bags available at selected Asda stores across the country.
Climate change is here to stay. We know that. It’s a fact. We will all have to make changes to our daily routines to adapt to our shifting climate.
The Environment Agency have developed a range of resources to promote World Environment Day, focussing on five key areas – being prepared for floods, saving water, helping wildlife, avoiding unnecessary travel and becoming a community asset.
Log onto www.environment-agency.gov.uk/wed and take part in their on-line survey, or you can download posters and create a link to your website, if you want to run your own campaign.
Please pass this information on if you know of a club or organisation who would be interested in taking part.
The Environment Agency will also be promoting the ACT ON CO2 campaign and government calculator which encourages people to reduce their carbon footprint. Visit www.direct.gov.uk/actonco2 for more details.
They are also working with a number of schools, forums and organisations across the Solent & South Downs Area and will be taking the campaign to the Mela Festival in Southampton on 19 July and the Greenpower heats at Goodwood on 29 June.
They are working with planning authorities to encourage them to take action on climate change by signing up to the Nottingham declaration and using climate change indicator’s in their Local Area Agreements. Asking them to produce Climate Change Action Plans and to include climate change in their strategic plans, as well as getting the message out to their local communities.
With increasing development in our Area, they are urging developers to avoid development in flood risk areas, consider sustainable drainage systems, install water efficient features as standard and design buildings that remain cool.
